This cast is somewhere between medium and large sized compared to the other fire ant colony casts. The
bottom half of the cast (the part that was closest to the surface) is mostly interconnected tunnels with only a few small chambers. Deeper into the colony the
large flat chambers start to emerge. You can really make out those flat chambers from the
above view. Most of the cast is what is below ground but I was able to get some aluminum in the actual surface mound. I didn't capture the entire surface mound (and usually don't) but it still has a nice hill shape to it that you can see in the main picture.
The cast is displayed upside down from its natural orientation and sits on three round wood risers attached to an oval wood base. The oval part of the base was purchased as is and stained with no clear coat, giving it a nice natural look. There are three 1-1/4" round wood risers which support the cast in its proper orientation. There is no mounting between the cast and the base so the cast can be taken on and off the base for viewing. The bottom of the base has four felt pads to protect the surface it is displayed on. A stainless steel plaque is mounted on the base engraved with the cast information.
