This is the part of the cast that sits on the display, which is what was closest to the ground surface of the actual fire ant colony. You can see that there's a blue paint mark on the left, a red one on the right, and a black one toward the bottom. These are marks that help you set the cast on the base. You can also see the circle in the center, which is where I poked a hole to pour the aluminum in, leaving a solid aluminum tube. On this cast the aluminum continued to sink into the hole after the pour, leaving the end of it to be a hollow tube.
