This is a partial cast of a larger fire ant colony. The aluminum stopped flowing through the colony during casting. I believe the reason for the failure was that the soil was too dry causing dirt to crumble away and clog the tunnels. Enough of the colony was captured to make an interesting cast though. The cast was powder coated with a "cast iron" color.
