I poured a cast before this one on the same day,
Cast #073 and it didn't take in as much aluminum as it should have. When I poured this one, the same thing happened. Determined to get more aluminum in, I quickly made a second hole to pour in, which helped to fill more of the colony but I still wasn't able to get a full cast of the colony. The cast still looks great.
Making a second pour hole caused there to be two larger solid pieces in the final cast where the aluminum fills the pour hole. Most casts will only have one and it's usually well hidden. From the
front view you can't see the pour stems, except where they attach to the base, but from the
back and
right the stems are more visible than usual.
The base is basswood with a dark walnut Danish Oil stain, which is darker than the stain normally use. The cast is secured to the base with two 1/4 inch bolts.
