This one of the smallest of the fire ant colony casts that I cast. Still, there is an amazing number of interconnected tunnels and chambers. It's similar to
Cast #006 in size, but slightly less weight and more width to it than height. This one is mostly tunnels without many well defined chambers like some
other casts have. The
tunnel sticking out to the left stands out to me as an interesting feature of this cast as well as its wide and compact shape.
The cast is displayed upside down from its natural orientation and is mounted to a basswood base. The cast is secured to the base with a bolt, which isn't possible with the larger casts. The only other fire ant colony cast which is mounted this way at this point is
Cast #006. The finish is a Danish oil stain with no clear coat, giving it a nice natural look. The bottom of the base has four felt pads to protect the surface it is displayed on. A stainless steel plaque is mounted on the base engraved with the cast information.
