I made this one for my niece. This is one of the smaller fire ant colonies that I have cast. It's small but it still has hundreds of tunnels and chambers. Some of the surface mound was captured, but not all. The aluminum turned out fairly dull on this one, but it still looks great. Some of my earlier casts turned out that way until I perfected my method. The upper left of the cast has a large disconnected section which is an interesting feature.
This cast is displayed on a metal frame. I made this one for my niece, who insisted that I paint the frame pink. An eyebolt is set in the cast and a hook on the frame allows the cast to be removed easily. It's an interesting way to display them but I haven't displayed any other ones this way, mainly because it's only suitable for a certain types of casts since it must be light and well balanced.
