This is an aluminum cast of a carpenter ant colony. There is a single tunnel which leads down to a series of long narrow chambers, with two parallel tunnels near the end. The tunnel is angled slightly away from the front view with most of the pads extending to the left and the right. The longest of the pads is at the top left and extends about 8 inches from the main shaft. The pads are approximately 1" wide with some wider sections. The long parallel tunnels at the end stick out about 9 inches from the last chamber pads.
The cast is displayed on a wooden base upside down from its natural orientation. The base is walnut with a nice glossy finish. I was able to use a smaller base on this one than I normally use because the mass is centered pretty well with the mounting point. The cast is secured to the base with a bolt. The bottom of the base has four felt pads to protect the surface it is displayed on. A stainless steel plaque is mounted on the cast containing information about it.
